Our farm (Paradiso la Caria) will be one of the vendors at Local Cloth’s 12th Annual FiberFest at the Spring Festival & Growing in the Mountains Plant Show during the weekend of April 20. The Plant Show brings together the best of spring in the mountains of North Carolina.

Weaving Color Block + Twill Bookmarks: An Intro Class to Weaving

Tuesday, April 23, 2024 | 10am – 5pm | Local Cloth, Asheville, NC

This full-day Introduction to Weaving class covers the basics of weaving through the process of creating handmade bookmarks on a small lap frame loom (which you can take anywhere!). During the class, we’ll cover how to load a shuttle, warp a loom, and some of the basic weaving techniques, including twining, tabby, twill and weaving in ends, which will help set you up for future weaving projects. We’ll start by creating a fun color block bookmark (designed by you!) and follow it with a second bookmark using the elegant twill pattern. You’ll leave the class with two of your very own bookmarks!

New to weaving? Don’t have a loom or weaving materials? No worries! This intro class is the perfect entry point to dip your toe. And, my Beginner’s Lap Loom Weaving Kit has everything you need to get started! Learn more in the Materials Section.

Weaving in the Present Moment: An Intro Class to Weaving and its Meditative Magic

Tuesday, June 4, 2024 | 10am – 5pm | Local Cloth, Asheville, NC

As a moving meditation, the process of weaving has a magical way of helping us to get out of our heads to simply “be,” and experience flow when working the loom. For me, weaving has helped me to see firsthand the connection between my mind and body and how one impacts the other. It has also helped me to slow down and enjoy the process just as much, if not more, than the piece of art that I create.

The goal of this class is to share this magic with you! This Introduction to Weaving class covers the basics of how to weave using a lap loom (which you can take anywhere!) and incorporates elements of mindfulness.

We’ll start with a weaving gratitude practice that will serve as the inspiration for our woven projects. Then, we’ll warp our looms and start weaving our designs, incorporating several basic weaving techniques, including twining, tabby, soumak, free-form and rya. You’ll leave with a hanging tapestry (designed by you!) and a weaving gratitude practice that you can continue on your own after the class.

Don’t have a loom? Don’t worry! I have created a Beginner’s Weaving Kit as an option under class materials and has everything you need to get started!

Looming Large: An Intro Class to Circular Weaving on a Big A** Hoop

Three Sessions: July 7, July 17 + Aug 6, 2024 | 10am – 5pm | Local Cloth, Asheville, NC

We are going big in this three-session Introduction to Circular Weaving workshop! We will create super huge Circular Weaving Tapestries — the size that is perfect for hanging above a sofa, bed, or to serve as the focal point on your wall. Using handmade 36” and 6” diameter circular looms, we will learn how to craft an open center circular weaving.

As a practice, circular weaving serves as a wonderfully meditative practice as you travel around the loom. This workshop will cover the basic techniques of weaving on a circular loom, including how to create yarn butterflies for weaving, how to warp a hoop loom with an open center, and circular weaving techniques, including tabby, rya, loops, and soumak, which you can use in all types of weaving projects.

Participants will also get to design and bring to life their own creations using these techniques. You’ll leave the class with your very own (very large) circular weaving! Because the tapestry is extra large, we will accomplish the project in three sessions with additional work to be completed (if necessary) between Sessions #2 and #3.

Curious about circular weaving or making something that is really big?! This intro class is perfect for beginners and individuals with some weaving experience.
